Eran Guter: Musical notation in Ludwig Wittgenstein’s Nachlass
Dr. Eran Guter (Max Stern Yezreel Valley College): Musical notation in Ludwig Wittgenstein’s Nachlass
Excerpts from Eran Guter’s lecture at the Wittgenstein House on 13 December 2024 (Workshop The Wittgenstein Corpis 2.0). Unfortunately, due to technical problems, this is what survived from Eran’s detailed presentation of the topic.
Eran Guter examined five rare instances where Wittgenstein uses musical notation to advance and elaborate his philosophical thinking. Analyzing and contextualizing these exemplars shows their relation to some of Wittgenstein’s most celebrated topics in his later work, such as rule-following and aspect perception. Additionally, Guter explored how thinking with and through music enabled Wittgenstein to reflect on and grapple with his own predicament as a philosopher during what he called ‘Zeit der Unkultur’.
We are delighted to include here Eran and Inbal Guter’s article Thinking Through Music: Wittgenstein’s Use of Musical Notation. Please click the link to access.
